Environmental Remediation

Environmental Remediation Services

Laboratory analysis of an environmental sample
Every remediation strategy starts with an accurate picture of what a site is actually dealing with.

Environmental remediation is the process of cleaning up hazardous substances in soil, groundwater and sediment, covering the removal, treatment and containment of pollution so a site can be safely used, redeveloped or sold. It sits at the more technical end of what we do, and it usually plays out as a project with distinct stages rather than a single visit.

Delta Environmental manages environmental remediation projects from the first site investigation through to final validation, coordinating with accredited environmental consultants and laboratories along the way so you have one point of contact for the whole project rather than several disconnected contractors. Below is how a typical project runs, followed by the specific technical services involved, from soil and groundwater remediation through to PFAS management and environmental consulting.

How it works

Our Environmental Remediation Services

01Environmental Assessment Services

Every contaminated site is different, and we start by understanding your specific project goals before recommending an approach. Rather than applying a standard checklist, we scope an assessment strategy around the site's history, the proposed end use, and your budget and timeline, then guide you through every stage from initial investigation to final validation.

02Site Investigations

A Stage 1 site investigation reviews a site's history, including past land use and any available records, to identify whether contamination is likely and where. If that review flags a concern, a Stage 2 investigation follows with intrusive sampling, drilling boreholes or test pits and laboratory testing, to confirm whether contamination is actually present and how far it extends.

03Remediation Strategy

Once a Stage 1 or Stage 2 investigation confirms contamination, we develop a remediation strategy tailored to what was actually found. This considers the type and extent of contamination, the site's intended future use, relevant state guidelines, and practical factors like access and budget, so the proposed approach is one that can genuinely be implemented rather than a generic template.

04Remediation & Site Validation

Remediation work is carried out to the agreed strategy, and validation can only be confirmed once that work is complete. We coordinate independent validation testing to demonstrate the site now meets the relevant criteria for its intended use, and provide a validation report suitable for council, lender or future buyer requirements.

05Waste Classification Management

Material excavated during remediation needs to be correctly classified before it can be legally disposed of or reused, and getting this wrong can mean costly delays or non-compliant disposal. We manage waste classification and disposal logistics so material is handled appropriately, whether that means disposal at a licensed facility or, where the contamination profile allows it, resource recovery instead.

06Environmental Management Documentation

Environmental regulation in Australia has become considerably more stringent, and the documentation expected alongside remediation work has grown with it. We prepare environmental management plans, monitoring documentation and compliance reporting to the standard now expected by regulators, councils and financiers, so your paperwork holds up to scrutiny.

07Due Diligence Assessments

Before acquiring a site, understanding its environmental condition is essential to making an informed decision, since undisclosed contamination can become an expensive problem after settlement. Our due diligence assessments give buyers, lenders and investors a clear picture of contamination risk before a transaction proceeds, so it can be priced in or addressed as a condition of sale rather than discovered afterward.

Technical capabilities

Soil, Groundwater & Environmental Consulting Services

Beyond the project stages above, these are the specific technical services that underpin an environmental remediation project.

08Soil Remediation Services

Contaminated soil, whether from historical industrial use, fuel or chemical spills, or heavy metal contamination, can be treated in place or excavated for off-site disposal or treatment depending on the contaminant and site conditions. We scope soil remediation around what a site-specific assessment identifies, rather than a one-size-fits-all excavation.

09Acid Sulfate Soil Management

Common in coastal and estuarine areas of Australia, acid sulfate soils release sulfuric acid when disturbed and exposed to air, with the potential to damage waterways, concrete and steel infrastructure if left unmanaged. Development in these areas typically requires a specific acid sulfate soil management plan, which we help scope and implement.

10Dewatering Services

Excavation and remediation work below the water table often requires controlled dewatering to keep a site workable and safe. Extracted water is managed and, where contaminated, treated before discharge or disposal in line with local water authority and EPA requirements.

11Contaminated Groundwater Consulting Services

Groundwater contamination requires monitoring bore installation, plume delineation and a remediation strategy tailored to the contaminant and local hydrogeology. We work alongside hydrogeological consultants to scope and implement groundwater monitoring and remediation programs.

12Vapour Remediation Services

Volatile contaminants in soil or groundwater can migrate as vapour into overlying buildings, a pathway known as vapour intrusion. Depending on the site, this is managed through sub-slab depressurisation systems, vapour barriers, or source remediation, guided by a site-specific vapour intrusion assessment.

13PFAS Remediation Solutions

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS, are persistent chemicals found at some sites with a history of firefighting foam use or certain industrial processes. PFAS remediation typically involves a combination of assessment, containment and treatment technologies such as activated carbon or ion exchange, scoped to the specific site and regulatory requirements involved.

14Contaminated Land Consulting Services

Stage 1 and Stage 2 environmental site assessments establish whether a property carries contamination risk from its history and current use, supporting due diligence for property transactions, planning approvals and financing. We coordinate these assessments with accredited environmental consultants.

15Environmental Management Consulting

Beyond one-off remediation, some clients need broader environmental management advice, covering compliance obligations, environmental management plans and ongoing monitoring programs. We can coordinate this consulting support alongside any physical remediation work required.

Why choose Delta

What You Can Expect When You Book Delta

Booking your site with an unfamiliar company can feel like a leap of faith, so we keep our side of the arrangement simple and transparent. You get a clear, itemised scope of works before anything begins, a fixed appointment window rather than a vague all-day slot, and a single point of contact for the life of the job rather than being passed between call centres.

If a job turns out to be larger or more complex once work is underway, we explain why, put any change in writing, and get your sign-off before proceeding. There are no surprise line items on the final invoice.

Straightforward, no-pressure quotes

We quote based on what your property actually needs, not a one-size-fits-all package. If a lighter touch will do the job safely, that is what we will recommend.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Environmental remediation is the process of removing, treating or containing hazardous substances in soil, groundwater or sediment so a site can be safely used, redeveloped or sold.

A Stage 1 investigation reviews a site's history and available records to assess whether contamination is likely. A Stage 2 investigation follows up with intrusive sampling and laboratory testing to confirm whether contamination is actually present.

Validation testing is carried out independently of the remediation team, the same principle we apply across every service we offer, so the result is genuinely verifiable.

If a site has any history of industrial, commercial or agricultural use, a due diligence assessment can identify contamination risk before you commit to a purchase, which is far cheaper than discovering a problem afterward.

It is classified according to the relevant state waste framework and disposed of at an appropriately licensed facility, or in some cases recovered and reused where the contamination profile allows it.

This varies significantly based on the site and contamination involved. A straightforward Stage 1 investigation can take days, while a full assessment, remediation and validation project can take months, particularly where regulatory approvals are involved.

Yes. Environmental management plans, validation reports and compliance documentation are prepared to a standard suitable for council, lender and regulator requirements.

Yes. Tell us about your site and its history and we will advise on next steps, at no cost and with no obligation.

Yes. Councils can require a validated remediation outcome as a condition of development approval, particularly on sites with a history of industrial, agricultural or landfill use.

Environmental remediation covers the technical, project-based assessment and cleanup of soil, groundwater and sediment contamination on a site. Our other services, such as mould or asbestos removal, generally address a specific contamination issue within an individual property rather than a broader site-wide environmental project.

PFAS refers to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a group of persistent chemicals historically used in some firefighting foams and industrial processes. Because they do not break down easily in the environment, PFAS-affected sites typically require specific assessment and treatment technologies rather than standard remediation methods.

It is a site-specific plan for managing soils that release sulfuric acid when disturbed and exposed to air, common in coastal and estuarine parts of Australia. These plans are often a condition of development approval in affected areas.

Yes. Groundwater contamination is assessed and managed alongside soil contamination where relevant, including monitoring bore installation, plume delineation and a remediation strategy tailored to the local hydrogeology.
